Get to Know Katey and Andrew

Updated: Nov 25, 2018

For those of you who don’t believe in dating apps, this next couple is a true Tinder success story. Andrew and Katey first met on Tinder and matched not only once, but twice! Andrew is currently in his fourth year in Queen’s Commerce and Katey is in her third year of Queen’s Life Sciences program.

Katey & Andrew

Read all about their Tinder success story (despite a minor, alleged “catfish” incident)!

Andrew: “[The story of how we met] is actually funny.”

Katey: “Not really.”

Last December, Andrew and Katey matched on Tinder, but luck was against them and Katey deleted her account before either of them could strike up a conversation.

Katey: “I was spending too much time on it. I would be up until like 3 am.”

Fortunately for these two cuties, Katey re-dowloaded the app in April in order to facilitate procrastinating for an exam.

Andrew: “I saw an updated photo, so I thought I’d message her.”

There must’ve been something special about Andrew, because Katey actually responded to him.

Andrew: “Apparently she doesn’t respond to people often, but she responded to me.”

After establishing this initial connection, the two spent some time getting to know each other and hung out a couple of times. Fortunately, they both headed home to Toronto after final exams were over, which enabled them to hangout over the summer.

For their first official date, Andrew recalls they went out for ice cream and a walk in the park (is this sounding like a modern version of The Notebook to anyone else?).

Katey: “We’re both lactose [intolerant] though, so that’s ironic.”

However, the not-yet couple once again faced a significant obstacle. Katey left for a month to travel to Peru for MedLife Queen’s (an international NGO that works to provide medicine, education and community development in Peru, Ecuador, Tanzania, and India).

At first, Andrew says that he was unsure if they would continue seeing each other after Katey came back from Peru…

Andrew: “But then she came back and we were hanging out again and again. Throughout the summer it got more serious and then…guess you can kind of speak to that…”

Katey: “No, you got it. It’s okay.”

Andrew: “Then I found out she didn’t really want to date, she kind of only wanted a summer thing, like that type of thing…but then, it ended up working out well. So, yeah, we’re dating now.”

Given the stereotypes that are often associated with Tinder dates and meeting up IRL, we at Human Crossing were extremely curious about Andrew and Katey’s first impressions of each other – both online and offline.

First, the couple shared their initial impressions of each other based on their first swipe right!

Andrew: “Go.”

*Katey laughs*

Katey: “Um, you have really nice eyes, so that was pretty cool.”

Andrew: “I messaged you, so I thought you were good looking, obviously.”

Katey: “I catfished you, though. It was a picture from grade 11 that I’d updated.”

We at Human Crossing: “LOL, classic Tinder.”

Andrew: “Yeah, on Tinder it was just based on looks, but then we started talking and hit it off, which was nice.”

As for their first face-to-face impression, Andrew was happily surprised.

Andrew: “It wasn’t a catfish, like how you’re trying to say, you looked the way I was expecting you to look… I was happy, I don’t know, what about you?”

*he laughs*

Katey: “Cool. Yeah.”

Andrew: “Yeah.”

Katey: “Yeah.”

Andrew: “There’s a bad stigma around Tinder, like I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I was really happy when we actually met and started talking and things just progressed from there.”

According to Katey, it was a rather interesting first IRL impression.

Katey: “He was pretty drunk when we first met. The first thing he told me was to take off his shoes for him. So that was kind of… It wasn’t bad, but I was kind of like who does this guy think he is? But later he called me an Uber and paid for it.”

Nevertheless, it’s clear that Andrew was making his intentions well known even before they began officially dating. While hanging out at a shopping mall over the summer, Katey remembers that Andrew swept her off her feet (so to speak) with a rather unconventional strategy…baked goods.

Katey: “We got food and he got Subway and I got a burrito, and then he like came back with his food and had a Subway cookie. So I asked him, ‘Oh man, can I have some of your cookie?’ and then he pulled out two cookies – one was for me and I hadn’t even asked.”

*we all awes and laugh*

Katey: “That’s when I knew he was a keeper.”

As for one of Andrew’s favourite memories of time spent together, he looks back fondly on the night that they attended the Vance Joy concert in Toronto for Katey’s birthday.

Andrew: “It started to rain and it was just super romantic. Yeah, that was one of my favourite nights.”

When asked what kinds of challenges they had experienced so far, the couple spoke about the struggle of transitioning from summer to school while in a relationship.

Katey: “You’re going from texting a lot and seeing each other every so often to being close to each other pretty much all the time. In the summer, when you do see each other, it’s kind of big deal… But now, you’re constantly so close and it’s important to remember that not every time you hang out has to be a big deal. [At school], you can just chill.”

Andrew: “Yeah, and the stress from school is obviously different. During the summer, you don’t really have anything to do except work, so… I don’t know, it is challenging now that you don’t always having the time to see each other and having to recognize that we all have different schedules. It’s something that we’ve adapted to and are better with now, but at the beginning of this semester, it was kind of tough.”

With a busy Week 11 currently on the go, the couple says they’ll still find time to study together when life gets hectic. However, when Katey and Andrew do have some time to spare, they like to watch The Good Wife and enjoy delicious food together.

Andrew: “We also like to do just random, spontaneous stuff. Like, last week we went to Rock Dunder just to explore.”

Rock Dunder

In terms of advice, Katey and Andrew have some wise words to share with our readers.

Katey: “Be honest with each other and if something’s on your mind, tell them so it doesn’t fester.”

Andrew: “If things are going tough, stick through them regardless of the situation (if you can) and things will usually turn out for the best, that’s what I’ve learned.”
